This is the first year in a long time a night race has been run so only six boats participated. By all accounts it was a very challenging and rewarding night – consider participating next year!
Alberta Cup was a classic Wabamun fall race with winds varying from barely a whisper to over 20 knots. Sunday racing was postponed until Monday due to high winds. Four Competitors were able to compete on Monday and Point of Order (Don and Sarah) came away with the win.
This year's Splice the Mainbrace race will take place September 22 and 23. The Notice of Race, Registration Form and Course Layout are in this document. Write to EYC Fleet Captain Tim Bowles at [email protected] if you have questions.
(What's this mainbrace and why does it need splicing? "Originally an order for one of the most difficult emergency repair jobs aboard a sailing ship...") This year's Fall Series will run over a single weekend, September 8 and 9. The Notice of Race, Registration Form and Course Layout are in this document. Write to EYC Fleet Captain Tim Bowles at [email protected] if you have questions.
The day started with light winds that became quite strong and gusty during all three Jack & Jill races, resulting in a couple of boats having to retire due to Equipment trouble. Despite the tough sailing conditions the day was very enjoyable with some fine sailing and tight competition. Many thanks to the Race Committee: Joanne Wynn & Tim Bowles from EYC and John Semple from SBYC. Wednesday August 15, the Wind finally picked up and allowed for some very entertaining and competitive Racing. However, due to some misinformation regarding the proper course to be sailed, the race results were declared null and void and will not be included in the series statistics. Apologies from Fleet Captain, Tim Bowles.
One more Wednesday night race remains, August 29. Please check out the Pursuit Sailing Instructions, including specifics on the continuous Triangle course to be sailed!! EYC members can view the most recent standing in the series. Drew Mitchell from North Sails will be back at Sunshine Bay Yacht Club the weekend of September 21 to measure up any sails that people may want to order. North Sails will give a volume discount if we order a number of sails at the same time.
Sailors interested in a new sail should email Craig Dirk, [email protected], saying what you are looking for and the make and size of your boat. The last couple of races have seen very light winds with tenacious Racers using all their skills to coax whatever speed they can out of their vessels. It is not too late to participate, as Pursuit Races (AKA, the Summer Series) continue on Wednesday evenings, August 15, 22 and 29.
EYC members can click here (password required) for access to the Notice of Race, Registration Form and your boat's PHRF rating and start time. Now, for something completely different, consider this Evening and Night race, starting August 25, finishing August 26, 2018. [Full moon that weekend! –mg]
